Descriptions of the responsibilities for the roles within the Graphics department
Understanding the art department crew roles and hierarchy on any film or television project is very important before starting in the industry. Below is a breakdown of the various roles you will find within the graphics team in the art department.
On the rate cards you'll be able to see the recommended weekly rates for each of the following roles.
Lead Graphic Designer
Also referred to a ‘Key Graphic Designer’ or ‘Graphic Art Director’. Experience 8+ years.

Script breakdown

Budget control, scheduling of work for painters, printers etc.

Hiring and managing a team

Liaising with other departments to identify graphic requirements

Liaising with clearance / legal

Research

Screen graphic breakdown, concepts, liasing with external vendors and screen gfx companies

Creative direction on assets that can be used for licensing material and merchandising

Graphic design duties incl. Illustration, concepts, graphic prop makes
Graphic Designer
Experience 3+ years.
Script breakdown

Schedule work and liaise with painters, printers and suppliers.

Liaising with other departments to fulfill graphic requirements

Responsible for overseeing/ directing work of junior graphic designer, graphics assistant or trainee

Research
Assistant Graphic Designer
Experience 2-3 years.

Responsible for output of graphics as instructed by senior graphic designer / art dir / set dec including creating and designing the graphics

Specialist knowledge using photoshop and illustrator

Responsible for many of the departments’ administrative type jobs such as keeping full stock of graphics materials, ordering specialist samples, papers and other supplies; keeping up to date with latest schedule, script and calendar

Research as instructed by senior graphic designer

Responsible for overseeing/ monitoring progress of graphics assistant or trainee (sometimes)

Liaising with suppliers and printers

Liaising with clearance / legal

Requires some element of supervision
Graphics Assistant
Experience 0-3 years.
Responsible for output of graphics as instructed by senior graphics art dir/ designer/ assistant graphic designer/ set dec

Running graphics errands around the studio and possibly on location

Research and reference gathering

Liaising with printers and suppliers regarding delivery and pick up dates

Submitting research and artwork clearance items to clearance coordinator as instructed by senior graphics art dir/ designer/ assistant graphic designer/
Graphics Trainee
No experience required. A starting role within the department learning essential skills.

Basic knowledge of photoshop and illustrator

Cutting, sticking, putting together & finishing prints & graphic props as designed by senior graphic designer

Responsible for many of the departments administrative type jobs such as keeping full stock of graphics materials, ordering specialist samples, papers and other supplies
